My art contends with transience and fragility. It is heavily rooted in observances of nature, and for inspiration I draw upon the naturally occurring fugue state of order and disorder. My process is both thoroughly technical, but also accidental. In composing ephemeral layer upon layer, patterns naturally form. I aspire to emulate the fleeting equilibriums of nature, but at the same time portray the paradoxical vitality of disorder.
In nature, lifeforms utilize camouflage to repel and attract: mushrooms wear colors that convey their toxins, whereas predators know their prey by distinct patterns. Landscapes are no different, as they are characterized by the collective camouflage of life that they harbor. These natural aesthetics are paralleled by human society, as we attempt to create miniature utopias within larger, chaotic systems. The work I make attempts to portray these microcosms, structures that are transient but purposeful.
I work with chemical materials, including resin, mixed media, ink and markers, all of which are subject to fading, deterioration. I use these fragile mediums to create simple patterns, and rely on the layering of these materials to create complexity. This is my own utopia. My art is derived from my perception of being a small part of a big landscape, of being a cell within a larger, dynamic system.
Life is a series of persistent memories, and the layering of these can be quite dense. Producing art entails re-creating mental spaces, ones that are populated by both enduring experience and also bursts of trauma. In retrospective, we make sense of the uneven density, producing narratives that encapsulate this rush and stall.
